Interview with Shigeru Miyamoto about Wii successor

Shigeru Miyamoto is the father of Super Mario, Princess Zelda and the game Donkey Kong gorilla. For Nintendo , he develops games for 30 years. With “Spiegel Online” said the legend of a successor to the Wii console, with 3-D Games – and the love of his creatures.

Nintendo, the industry has with the 3-D mobile console 3DS surprised. But are 3-D games on the road more than a gimmick?

Shigeru Miyamoto: We follow the development in terms of 3-D at Nintendo for over 20 years. Now we can first produce a 3-D console for which you do not need special glasses. We have long thought about how you can make good use in games. A 3-D game like “Super Mario 64″ for example: If the normal running on a screen, many players have difficulties to find the right spot for jumping to jump on the next block. With a 3-D image, with depth impression that is much easier.

Analysts indicate that sells the Wii console is not quite as well, also because it does not produce HD images. Until now, motion control, their main distinguishing feature over the consoles from Sony and Microsoft now have both competitors and motion control systems in the program. Is it not time to reflect on a Wii successor?

Miyamoto: Many people still have a lot of fun with the Wii, there are still many good games out for it. But we think ever since the launch of the console after about a successor. We monitor the market closely. When the time comes, we will announce a successor. But that will not be very soon.

If the then a 3-D Wii?

Miyamoto: I do not think the next step will be ours. Wii is indeed one reason so successful because most people do not have any HD equipment and have to appreciate what the Wii offers. The Nintendo 3DS is possible because it is a portable console and it works without 3D glasses. For the living room would need a 3-D TV and it will take some time before enough households have 3-D TVs that the theme for the Gaming significant falls.

It satisfies you that the competition will now things in motion control running after

Miyamoto: From the satisfaction I would not talk. I think more likely: “See, I knew, I like you.” I’m always curious how people will react to games. So I am looking forward to see the new “Zelda game” because we have extensively reworked the control system.

With this “Zelda” titles go even further in the direction of motion control. Most actions are not triggered by button presses, but by gestures. Do not think that many players in spite of everything rather sit on the sofa and do not want to be, especially in a long game like “Zelda”?

Miyamoto: You can “play Zelda while seated. No one is forced to stand. When I play at work, then usually in my office chair. But when you get up, you will experience a completely different gaming experience, more immersed in the game world. You will feel as if they really hold a shield and a sword in his hands. His sword is to be sent to heaven in the game a very important action.

Mario appears now for 30 years playing on in, Link, Zelda “is already quite old, and many other games they E3 in Los Angeles have presented the case based on the old characters. Is not it time for some new ones?

Miyamoto: We’re always thinking about new characters to and we have also developed many. Pikmin, for example, or the Miis on the Wii. They are indeed designed by the players avatars, but they are clearly recognizable as Nintendo characters and we use it in titles like “Wii Party”. As for Mario: He is so great because he is like a blank canvas. Some people compare him with Mickey Mouse, but that does not fit. Micky is a fully defined character Mario does not. We do not know what he likes to eat, what is his favorite color. For games which is great because he can do it all. Without a space suit flying through space, exercise any sport. We will keep him too, because you can make very simple new game with him.

Many of the old Nintendo characters you have invented himself, now they appear to play in, in studios around the world arise. How do you feel when their creations are taken over by another?

Miyamoto: A little bit, as if their children leave the house. But I know with whom they feed, and believe me, I see it very closely at what they do. You know I’m always there for them.

At E3 2009, they have a “Vitality sensor presents, and the other should measure the pulse rate. Since then we have not heard of it …

Miyamoto: The Vitality sensor is still in development. The E3 is not the place to do so, it needs rest and peace, so we understand what is at stake here. But we will show more of the sensor when the time comes.
