Game industry is passing dark time, says EA founder

Trip Hawkins founder EA
Founder EA, Trip Hawkins, thinks that developers need to focus on open platforms such as web browsers if the industry wants to emerge from what he described as a dark age.

Hawkins, who is now president of the company’s social games, Digital Chocolate believes that developers are too dependent on the companies that own the current consoles, which are attracted by false promises of freedom and take ownership of the land they are cultivating. Speaking at the event Games Beat 2011, Hawkins commented:

“I think we had our golden era when game development using floppy disks and when I was a free and open platform where everyone could make video games the way we wanted. Nintendo arrived and began licensing software, and have been in a dark time since. “

“No doubt there is a war for the hearts and minds of developers. They will decide what lord wins or loses. The days of float your boat on one platform are over. The question is, you as a developer, are you a landowner? “

In summary, Hawkins considers that the vast majority of game developers of today are quite limited by sector companies, thus preventing that can make the most of your creativity.
